STAND-IN FOR THE HIGH COURT

THE TIMES.

17th SEPT , 1981.

One of the senior resident judges at the Central Criminal Court made history yesterday in a three-minute ceremony.

In a crowded No 1 court, before Lord Lane the Lord Chief Justice, and assembled judges, Mr. John Leonard ,QC, aged 55, the former Common Serjeant of London, was sworn in as a High Court judge. It was the first time in living memory that the ceremony had taken place at that court rather than in the High Court and No 1 court became part of The High Court for the occasion.

A court official said it was done partly for convenience and partly out of courtesy to Judge Leonard – now Mr. Justice Leonard.
